Colville provides solid waste
and recycling services across the North Slope
of Alaska,
operating under the Regulatory Commission of
Alaska Certificate of Public Convenience and
Necessity #283. The Western Service Area includes
Kuparuk, Alpine, NPR-A west to the Ikpikpuk
River, and coastal waters up to 3 miles offshore
of those regions.
The Dalton Service Area extends from Prudhoe
Bay south to Atigun Pass, and includes the
highway corridor, service roads, pump stations,
and areas within 5 miles of each side of the
roadway.
Services provided by Colville fall into three
categories: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), Construction
Debris (CD), and Recyclables.
MSW usually comes from kitchens or camps,
and is characterized by wastes that may attract
animals. These bins normally must have some
means such as a lid to prevent bears, foxes,
and birds from feeding on or scattering the
contents.
CD usually comes from warehouses or construction
sites and contains materials that do not attract
animals and is not susceptible to wind scatter
such as pit liners, drill cuttings, and crushed
concrete. These bins are often left uncovered,
although lids can be ordered if desired.
MSW and CD wastes are disposed at the North
Slope Borough Oxbow Landfill.
Recyclables include Metal, Wood, Tires, Cardboard,
and Oily Waste. Each of these material streams
have specialized bins and handling procedures.
Recyclables, with the exception of wood, are
shipped to permitted facilities in Anchorage
or outside of Alaska.
A variety of bins and recycle containers are
available, including large roll-on/roll-off
bins for MSW, CD, wood, tires, metal, oily
waste, and drilling cuttings. Bins may be ordered
with lids to prevent animal access or wind-blown
scatter.
Lined and unlined pallet boxes are available
for recycling oily waste, kitchen grease, and
paper products.
